Support Contracts Explained For Buyers Outside The Vendor Channel
Entitlement determines whether you can download software and obtain replacement hardware. It is separate from the purchase.
Hardware and Entitlement Are Separate Purchases
Buying the hardware does not automatically grant the right to software updates or advance replacement. Those come from a support contract which is bought separately and registered against the serial number.
Registration Should Be Under the End User Name
A contract registered to a reseller creates a problem the day the end user needs to open a case directly. Insist that registration is written under the party that actually operates the equipment.
Response Levels Should Match Site Reality
A four hour replacement level is only meaningful if the vendor holds a depot near that site. For remote locations a held on site spare frequently delivers better real recovery time at lower cost.
Track Expiry Ahead of Lapse
Reinstating a lapsed contract is usually more expensive than renewing an active one and sometimes requires an inspection. Build the expiry calendar into the asset register.
Reconcile Serials Regularly
Estates drift as units are moved retired and replaced. A contract that covers serials no longer in service while missing serials that are is a common and expensive discovery during an incident.
