Server Drive Compatibility And Firmware Levels
A drive that fits physically may still be rejected by the controller or the array. Part number and firmware are what matter.
Form Factor Is Not Compatibility
A 2.5 inch SAS drive fits many caddies but the controller and the array decide whether it is accepted. Matching the vendor part number rather than the raw specification is what prevents a rejection at insertion.
Caddies Are Generation Specific
Drive caddies differ between server generations. Ordering a drive without confirming the caddy generation produces a drive that cannot be mounted which is a surprisingly common delivery problem.
Firmware Mismatch in Arrays
Arrays frequently require drives at or above a given firmware level. Mixing levels can produce degraded performance or a refusal to join the group. Confirm the array firmware level at order time.
Hot Spare Planning
A hot spare must match the drives it may replace in capacity type and often part number. A generic spare that the array will not accept is not a spare.
